It’s a special website update as we’re super proud to announce that Sarah Roper has won The Sybil Conway Award for Best Female Character in a Play for her portrayal of Helene Hanff in our May 2024 production of 84 Charing Cross Road, directed by Mari Fleming and produced by Katja Hunt.
Congratulations to Sarah, and to the entire team of 84 Charing Cross Road for this amazing recognition.
All District Winners are eligible to be considered for the Regional Awards which will be presented, along with the District Winner certificates, on Sunday 22 June at The Radlett Centre as part of the NODA London AGM and Celebration
“84 Charing Cross Road” is a heartwarming tale that transcends time and geography, eloquently capturing the power of words and human connection. Written by Helene Hanff, adapted for the stage by James Roose-Evans and Directed by Mari Fleming, this enchanting play unfolds through a series of letters exchanged between Hanff, a vivacious New York writer, and Frank Doel, a reserved and knowledgeable bookseller from London. Over the years, their correspondence blossoms into a deep friendship, despite them never meeting face-to-face.

This was an heartfelt production as it was dedicated to our dear friend Lawrence Picking who unfortunately passed before he could see this play performed on stage. In the words of the director, Mari Fleming, “I always promised him, when he was very ill, that I would put it on. His enthusiasm for this play captured us all, especially as he chose it for his directorial debut.”
